SIMPLE WORDS

SIMPLE WORDS
Erle Frayne Argonza / Ra

In every production of my pen
Of full narrative or poem
I’m compelled to write in simple
Words that folks could comprehend

It’s no joke to dazzle minds
With jargons and magical words
For just like magic on a wand’s stroke
Will make the denouement outpace
The cognition of the enthusiastic viewer
Will only obscure the thought presented
And leave the consciousness dangling
On rotten vines of superstition and illusion

For I’m supposed to offer
Lines that shatter false images
It’s so that every undertaking
Of thinking and imagining
Will irradiate the knowing viewer
With rays of clarity and concreteness

[Writ. 06 June 1988, Angeles City, Pampanga, on a visit to the Angeles University Foundation.]

REFLECTION
The manner of articulation, whether to be elegant or to be simple in presentation, is really one of personal choice. Being schooled in college in the University of the Philippines, where the ‘school of elegance’ prevailed, I had to consciously remind myself of the full import of writing and speaking with simplicity, thus diverging from my own fellow alumni who bore with them the elegance that was to make marks in their work situations.
I was actually influenced by Albert Einstein who urged theoretical physicists to discourse with simplicity. Having been exposed to theoretical physics and social sciences as a young man, it was a tall order to follow the ‘school of simplicity’. I admitted that at times I veered too far away from it, as my writings turned out too abstruse and complex, unreadable even to my fellow academics (they kept on complaining that they cannot understand an iota of my discourse).
Yet I found out early how Einstein, born a gifted child, was able to present his general and special theories with utter simplicity. If the noblesse theoretician can do it, likewise can I do it. Many spiritual masters actually took the choice of simplicity, even as their being so wise and pure already made them stand out as elegant Beings of Light.
Being simple in articulation doesn’t mean being simplistic. The latter is a flaw of reductionism, which should be avoided. No matter how complex your subject of presentation is, you can simplify it no less and yet show such a complexity before your audience or readers in more digestible verbiage.

WHY NOT HUMILITY?

WHY NOT HUMILITY?
Erle Frayne Argonza / Ra

Why not be humble at all moments
Of association with fellowmen?
Didn’t the shopworker teach you
That one rudiment of survival
Is the intelligent recognition
Of your limitations’ omnipresence
Inspite of endowments of craft & wealth?
For there too are circumstances
That are beyond you grasps
In the snares of Naivete
And may even cause a furor
Of gig and limitless giggle?
For Boastfulness and Arrogance
Are twin eagles of deception
That once they’d lift you aflight
They’d shake you off the winds to crash
Tragically on the solid ground
Of defeat and humiliation?

O! Humility!
You are a noble messenger
That speaks for transparent Security
One that makes a person immensely cherished
By the commonwealth of all men.
[Writ. 05 June 1988, Proj. 8, Quezon City, M.Manila]

REFLECTION
Being an islander in Asia, born a Filipino, I was taught humility as a sublime virtue. As I grew up, I found out that humility is a cross-cultural virtue, taught by sages and gurus of the Teaching. As a lad, I had great love for erudite yet humble persons, and had deep scorn for braggarts and arrogant persons.
The Filipinos are incidentally descendants of ancient Lemurians, who  were gifted with perfecting Karma Yoga even prior to the emergence of the Filipino in the historic landscape. Service and bhakti (devotion) go sublimely together, such traits blossoming well among many of my well-meaning compatriots here. For the servant cum devotion person, humility is a sublime virtue exhibited as natural behavior, it being one of the ‘ginintuang ugali’ (golden traits) offered to us by our divine heritage.
Endeared spiritual Aspirants should internalize the virtue well and live it in daily living. Humble yet magnanimous persons will eventually be golden traits of the habitués of New Earth. In contrast, braggarts, arrogant ones will be driven out of Earth and transferred to the dense world that await them, there to brag and condescend on others to their hearts’ delight.

ON MEASURING LOVE

ON MEASURING LOVE
Erle Frayne Argonza /Ra

Love, concern and sincerest care
For the loved one and all loved fellows:
Could these be measured
Like the metered current
That powers the home?
If it were so could devotion be paid
In sheets over sheets of monies?

Perhaps the cats, dogs
And other wondrous pets at home
Can offer the answer:
Wondrous pets don’t count at all
Their kisses and devotion to friends
O! How they keep on giving!
They simply keep on giving!
[Writ. 04 June 1988, Proj. 8, Quezon City, M.Manila]

REFLECTION

The Law of Reciprocity posits: “Do for others what you want them to do for you.” A sacrosanct low in all spheres of existence, it is fully substantiated in the conduct of devotion.

As I was saying in that youthful poem of mine, devotion is a matter of quality of relationship, not a matter of quantity of giving. Take notice of your very own pets and see how totally devoted they are to you, never counting the love they offer to you. Such a behavior we must exude before the Almighty Providence and the sublime created Beings in all dimensions, inclusive of our own fellow humans.

For the egotistical types, giving love is a matter of quantity, such a love therefore being not ‘true love’. It is manipulative behavior, exuded to control people, enslave ‘the other’ in disproportionately asymmetric relations, and manifested with the expectation that others will reciprocate in kind. These are the types whom the Spiritual Hierarchy will expel from Terra post-2012, transferred to the world fit for their own psyche and awareness.
